This course centered on the intersection of human resources and its relevance to public administration. Its primary goal was to develop a comprehensive manual tailored for a police department situated in northern Utah. A fundamental insight gained from the course is the expansive nature of human resources, encompassing critical issues capable of significantly influencing organizational dynamics in a positive manner.
This course equips students with practical insights into reviewing, translating, and understanding human resources within the context of public administration. The content covered in this course holds universal applicability to all facets of public administration, given that institutions primarily revolve around managing people and their interactions.
This course is integral to all aspects of public administration, as any public sector entity operates fundamentally due to its people, and human resources, by nature, revolves around managing individuals. Consequently, human resources plays a pivotal role in shaping all aspects of public policy and organizational structures within the realm of public administration.
I found Vroom's expectancy theory particularly enlightening, as it underscores the notion that individuals are motivated to excel when they believe that their additional efforts will be acknowledged and rewarded. I am convinced that the principles inherent in this theory hold significant applicability in both my personal and professional life. For example, an individual's performance, whether in the workplace or personal endeavors, can be effectively assessed by considering factors such as personality, skills, knowledge, experience, and abilities.
Joel Ontiveros presents a case, involving MarShawn DeMur's formal complaint of religious discrimination and racial harassment at Treton Communications. DeMur claims he was denied a promotion due to his religious affiliation and faced instances of racial harassment. Immediate action is recommended by human resources director Marta Ford and VP of diversity Judith Dixon. The issues include religious discrimination, racial harassment, concerns about promotion choices, leadership conduct, and employee behavior.
In the artifact, Joel Ontiveros presents insights from three case studies on work-life balance strategies implemented by various organizations—W.L. Gore & Associates, Motorola, Scottish Court Service, and Lothian and Borders Police Service (LBP).
