Population

Joanna Goddard

POP1 – entire work

POP4 – entire work

The life of insects demonstrates that everything comes down to reproduction at any cost and to purposeless destruction” – Filippo Tommaso Marinetti 1919

Population occupies the curious space that exists between the appealing and the disturbing.

The work is like something seen under an electron microscope, a life form scaled up fantastically.

Joanna’s work is an unsettling mixture of the organic and the erotic. She is inspired by genetic mutations, the possibilities of “super nature” and watching the Discovery Channel.

The colours are bright pastels and the surface is porous. Population is strangely lacking in the heavy feeling usually associated with ceramic sculpture – the pieces almost seem to be made of foam.

The work shares some of the soft, tactile qualities associated with the germination and reproduction of both animals and plants.

Population is a stop frame, slow motion movie in clay, the evolution of a new life form thorough a biomorphic progression. The form distorts as it becomes colonised by the parasitism pods.

Population is a kind of plastic taxidermy, a series of moments in time - maybe on another planet where life moves slower.

Technique & Materials:

Handbuilt earthenware with slipcast inserts, all parts decorated with body stains & oxides.

Population consists of four sculptures, which would ideally be shown together, but could be shown separately. Larger colour images can be seen on my website www.joannagoddard.co.uk

All four parts of the artwork have individual wooden transportation boxes.
