Multicultural aspects of my roots
The truth is that I don't know much about my beginnings.
On the Shields side, my grandfather told me that his parents came from Jamaica to Panama in search of a new life. Then he joined my grandmother, who was from Colón, and together they had my dad. However, he was never very present in my life, so I don't have much connection to that side of the family.
On the Herrera side, I don't have much information either.
In fact, Herrera shouldn't even have been our last name, but Benavides. It turns out that my great-grandfather's father didn't want to recognize him because of the color of his skin—he was black—so my great-great-grandmother recognized him as a single mother, and he never took his father's last name. Then my grandfather married a woman from Los Santos, and together they had my mother.
And so, uniting the Shields and the Herreras, here I am. And I'm the only one who exists.
Multicultural expectations

I hope to develop tools that will help me recognize when an expression, reference, or custom cannot be translated literally and needs to be adapted to make sense in another culture.
I am also interested in better understanding the role of the translator as a bridge between cultures, someone who not only masters two languages but also understands the ways of thinking and living in two different worlds. I hope that, by the end of the course, I will be able to produce translations that are more faithful to the original context but also more understandable and natural for the reader of the target language.
