Verbatim theatre is a type of performance where the script is created from real-life conversations and interviews. Instead of a playwright imagining characters and dialogue, verbatim theatre uses the actual words spoken by real people.
In this verbatim monologue where I performed as my classmate Jae, I had to interview them using a zoom recorder to get the best quality of audio. I asked Jae to describe a time they did something bad, I transcribed the dialogue and recorded the interview capturing all of Jae's gestures. It took a long time but with the text, gestures, and the overall costume the experience was challenging because of the specificity and also fun to be able to incorporate myself in someone else's "character".
Reiteration of Verbatim Monologue
In this reiteration of the Verbatim Monologue, we were tasked to create a unique 5 minute performance while keeping the essence of the interview dialogue.
For this piece, I wanted to give Jae, who I interviewed, the chance for redemption and to relive their story through a game of basketball and elementary trash talk.
