In this one on one performance called Comedy Before Dark, we played with the concept of performance as gifts. The process of this performance was very personal and required a lot of active listening. I interviewed a classmate and really got to know her and the things she liked and disliked, from there we made a performance score that would only make sense and would cater to them. It was a tender and sweet process, that made her laugh and smirk at the end.
"Comedy Before Dark" mimics a comedy club setting with an audience member of one, Ruby. In this performance, I gathered stories from people who already knew Ruby and prompted them to share funny or favorite moments they had experienced with her. I cracked jokes and narrated their comedic stories, all centered around Ruby, giving the impression that I was the one who had personally experienced those moments with her. Initially, there was some confusion, with statements like "I don't remember doing that with Jill," but after some time, she caught on and realized that was not the case. The outcome was fun and lighthearted, leaving her feeling like the butt of the joke in the sweetest way.
