We stood in certain locations, like the city and the park and held up a sign inviting people to:
GRAB A CAMERA
TAKE SOME PHOTOS
BRING IT BACK
The dynamic of trust goes both ways in this piece. Not only are we giving them our cameras and trusting them with that responsibility of taking photos, but they also need to trust us with what we do with the footage afterwards. It is a balancing act that is only obtainable if both parties are willing to balance together.
Overall, this experience was extremely eye-opening for the three of us. We dealt with pitfalls, we celebrated victories, we connected with strangers, we shared them with familiar faces. Though most importantly, we allowed ourselves to trust and be trusted. In doing that, we were able to see Gastown, a setting that we see every single day, through the eyes of someone new. All because we asked people to “Grab a camera, take some photos, bring it back”.
