Mer rescued a young and injured Elbio as a yearling. After nursing the raptor back to good health, Mer set the bird free to be with his own kind. Several days passed as Mer went about his life, until Elbio returned, a freshly killed rabbit in his claws.

Elbio had brought a gift to Mer for helping him, and the raptor refused to leave from then on. The relationship is mutually beneficial, hunting together, and protecting each other from the dangers the lurk on Ulfrheim's mountains and in her caves. Elbio also has the tendency to find valuable things on the mountains that would otherwise escape Mer's notice.
