The title of this painting comes from the Stan Rogers tune, Three Fishers, which is a tale of three fisherman who were lost at sea;
"Though the storms be sudden and the waters be deep"
There are only two fishermen in this piece, but I added three tiny seabirds in the distance in reference to the lyrics that were running through my head during the painting process. The reference photo was from an archive that highlighted the lives of fishermen in NL who lived and worked along the southern shore many decades ago.
This painting was an experiment in depth and values while using the very limited apelles palette, which is a combination of white, black, red, and yellow. I find this palette lends a lot of drama to the atmosphere of the landscape, which suited the tone of the piece.
Though Storms Be Sudden is painted in acrylic on prepared wood panel, sealed and mounted in a custom built black pine frame. Outside dimesions are 9x12"
