This is our 5th year of Jefferson County CTC Youth Research Internships. Each year we have had adult partners work side-by-side with our youth. Those of us who have done this have been astounded by what our youth have been able to accomplish. One key is to have adults partners working with the youth.
As such, your role will be to provide riverbanks for the projects, which includes:
Redirecting when needed, through suggestions, open ended questions, or helping with research to make sure that all messages, events, and policies are prevention focused and based directly on logic model data, community input, and evidence. Find out more about the data we collect and use here.
Insisting that all of us, both adults and youth, stick to these professional expectations.
Provide support if resources are needed. These could include connections with others through introductions, online resources, or methods for doing their own research.
Encourage and support good record keeping, notetaking, and documentation.
Last, and most important, let's make sure we are making this a safe and inclusive space. Please be ready to provide help or resources should needs arise. The crisis line of Colorado Crisis Services is a good resource, and we recommend you save it in your phone just so you have it ready: 1-844-493-8255 Or Text “TALK” to 38255.
These meetings include:
Introduction to your internship, Thursday 10/14/21 from 4-5:30 PM
Planning your internship, Thursday 10/21/21 from 4-5:30 PM
Jeffco CTC Youth Voices Conference Thursday 4/28/22 from 4-6 PM
Celebration! Thursday 5/5/21 from 4-5:30 PM
You will receive a calendar invitation to these meetings.
Interns have been asked to expect 11 meetings with their team; they can be scheduled any time that isn't one of the "Big Group" meetings listed above.
One of those "meetings" should be an event that they invite other Jeffco CTC interns to (see below).
If you want to, most groups will be meeting from 4-5:30 PM on Thursdays via Zoom-- and your group can meet then using a breakout room. If this is your selection, let CTC staff know and they will handle the Zoom set up and reminders for you.
Each team needs to host at least 1 event to invite other interns to, which is sent to CTC staff 2 full weeks prior to the event (earlier = better!); these might be focus groups, input sessions, book club meetings, community awareness walks, Teen Spaces nights--- or whatever you all come up with!
February is our annual Youth Town Hall-- but you could still have meetings or events in February if you like.
Each team should prepare a 3 - 6 minute video about their project to present at the Youth Voices Conference on April 28th; videos must be turned in by April 15th. For some of you, that will be easy and fun. In some cases, a youth on the team will be able to create a video. However, the CTC team can also support your video production efforts. Just let us know by early March.
We have found, over the years, that separate adult meetings simply leads to adults making decisions without the youth-- which is definitely not the point! However, if the group of adults would like to meet, please jump in and suggest a time and an agenda. Or, alternatively, if you are interested in joining our monthly youth engagement meeting, please let any CTC staff member know.
Purple meetings are your team meetings.
They can take place at any time you like.
If you prefer, your team can meet at the same time as many of our other teams-- on Thursdays from 4-5:30 PM. Your team can use one of the breakout rooms, and CTC staff can help out by sending out reminders to your team.
