Color Guard
Directors: Robin Galbraith and Chris Paulson
Semesters: 2 (Fall and Spring)
Prerequisite: Audition and permission of Director of Bands and Color Guard Director
Students will be exposed to a variety of dance concepts, including techniques used in ballet, modern, jazz, and interpretive dance. The class will expose students to dance work that includes activities which will develop students' abilities to create movements from interpretation of music. They will be able to use images, both directed and self-created, to apply to movement. Through this class, they will be able to experience how musical phrasing, rhythmic structure, and pulse affect dance movement. They will be encouraged to include props, costumes, and design into their learning experiences.
The class will include, but is not limited to, activities that develop the students' abilities to understand the body's physical potential; develop listening, comprehension, and memorization skills; and identify and use, both orally and in writing, appropriate terminology related to style and technique.
During the fall semester, the Color Guard class is composed of members of the Marching Band Color Guard. This course is required of all students opting to participate in the Marching Band as members of the Color Guard. Please review information related to the Marching Band, which also applies to this class.
Performance opportunities in the Fall will mirror that of the Marching Band.
During the spring semester, students in this class will make up the Winter Guard performing ensembles, and will follow a performance schedule of IHSCGA competitions.
Winter Guard
Directors: Robin Galbraith
Color Guard students may choose to participate in one of two Winter Guard ensembles, both of which compete in the Indiana High School Color Guard Association. Students in these extracurricular ensembles rehearse after school, several times a week, beginning in December, and compete regularly from February through late March.
Students are placed in each ensemble based on audition and the recommendation of the Director of the Color Guard.
