RESEARCH - WEEK ONE

Monday 4th - Sunday 10th of March
To start this week of research, I wanted to start by creating the Google Forms for my game. I aim to create two Google forms covering the areas I plan to work on for the game. I will create one form on the main shooting mechanics and what players expect from similar games. Then I will create one on the sounds and UI found in games.
I chose not to create one on the gameplay style and mechanics, which I will expand more on in the reflection of this segment. For each form, I will create a plan of the information I want to gain as well as what I will do with it. I plan to send these off for a week to get enough responses.
To start with Google Form One, I wanted to ask questions about shooting games in general and what makes them good. To start the survey, I want to get a grasp of what they have played and how that will impact the rest of the form. After that question, I will ask them what it was from the games they chose that stuck out in their minds. Next, I will ask them that mechanics are essential for the genre of shooting games.
After that question, I will ask about the aspect not related to shooting that stands out. Then I will ask about what draws them into shooting games. I will ask about what parts of shooter games make them want to keep playing. Then I will ask a question about team mechanics to gather information on that, as our game is multiplayer. Lastly, I will ask about how long they play in one session to get a look at how long our game should be and how knowledgeable they are about the genre.
Here are the questions that I decided on for the first google form on the shooting mechanics. I followed my plan for these and made a question to hopefully get the answers to the topics I aimed for. I asked a total of nine questions covering the topics I planned. The questions are down below:
For the second Google form, I will create one on the UI and sounds for the game. I hope to gather information on the player's opinions of other game's sounds and UI. This survey will also aim to get their opinion on what makes a good UI and sounds.
For the first question, I will ask about what games they think have good in-game UI. Then I will ask what it is about that game's UI that makes it good. Then I will ask what they expect to see in a simple game UI. I will ask about the UI feedback like animations and sounds. Lastly, for UI, I will ask about the colours they think work well for a game's UI.
For the sounds, I will start by asking what games have good menus and in-game sounds. After that, I will ask if there should be in-game music for a game like ours. I then will ask what type of sounds get annoying to them to not include them. Then I will ask what game aspect needs audio. Lastly, I will ask what sound if missing would be noticeable.
Here are the questions that I decided on for the second google form on the UI and sounds for the game. I followed my plan for these and made a question to hopefully get the answers to the topics I aimed for. I asked a total of five UI questions and five sound questions. The questions are down below:
Reflection:
To start the reflection I would like to go over why I did not create any questions on the actual game mechanics like the PvP system and team-based system. The first and main reason for this is that my team are having a substantial say in this aspect, meaning that the people say may not get included. another reason for this is sue to most games use the same systems, this would make most answers the same and would not help the idea.
Next to reflect I think the questions cover a good range of topics and I did a good job of keeping the question to my topics. I made two surveys to cover the topics I wanted and get enough information on them. I could have asked more about the shooting mechanics like what issues they have with the common ones. Then I could have gone into more detail on the systems.
This may have confused the audience so I am glad I did not do it. From the early responses, I seem to get the results I have aimed for. I will break these down more next week in my first week of proper research.
