Standard 9 - Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy – The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.
Teacher Interview
Rationale: This artifact is an interview with a veteran teacher. I came up with six questions using the Charlotte Danielson Framework for Teaching to ask a teacher and record her responses. I then reflected on the answers, as well as received substantial information that will help me with my future classroom.
Connection to IPTS Standard: This step meets Standard 9 because the information in the interview will help me strengthen my "leadership in the learning community". It will also help me reflect and develop as a reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism.
Self-Evaluation: I learned so much from this interview. The teacher provided me with great tips on classroom management, building communication with parents, incorporating students’ interests and cultural heritage, enhance student participation, and evaluation tips. With this information, I will be able to further enhance my educator knowledge and experiences.
Parent Introduction Letter
Rationale: This artifact is a letter I created to give to parents at the beginning of the school year. This letter is so parents get a broad idea on important classroom information such as my expectations for their children, contact information, grading scales, etc. The letter is in Spanish since I work with predominantly Spanish speaking parents.
Connection to IPTS Standard: This artifact connects with the standard because it is a wonderful example of advocating "for students, parents or guardians, and the profession". Having clear and consistent communication with parents is imperative as they benefit by becoming more confident about the value of their school involvement. Parents also develop a greater appreciation for the important role they play in their children's education.
Self-Evaluation: Creating this artifact helped me organize what was important for parents to know at the beginning of the school year. This letter was created to get sent home before open house. It serves a parent resource to clear any beginning of the year doubts or misinformation.
