Standard 5 - Instructional Delivery – The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
My Flip Project
Rationale: I used Flipped Classroom to demonstrate how to compare fractions with unlike denominators using models. I started off with two models, the first model expressed the first fraction and the second model expressed the second fraction. Students can then see the parts shaded in purple out of the whole in yellow. Depending whether the first model had more, less, or equal parts shaded in comparison to the second model, a number sentence was created. After the lesson, students are given exposure in figuring out how to compare fractions with unlike denominators using models as a visual. Visuals are vital for bilingual students as well as English Language Learners.
Connection to IPTS Standard: Flipped Classroom is an amazing tool that can be used at home. Being able to watch the video at home and repeating it whatever times necessary meets teaching Standard 5 which states, "competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning". Students are better equipped by being able to preview the future lesson. I made sure to provide a short, clear, and creative video to engage student learning and promote problem- solving, continuous growth, and learning.
Self-Evaluation: Creating this artifact has given me a wonderful tool to use with my future students. This approach allows students to preview the lesson at home before it is taught at school. Students are able to foresee what new concept is being taught and come prepared with any questions they might have. Parents can also watch along with their children and view what will be learned to better assist their children at home. Parent communication is crucial and Flipped Classroom has broadened the gateway for parent involvement.
Flip Project Quiz
Rationale: My second artifact is a quiz that went along with the lesson. This quiz shows what the students learned and if they understood the concept. It is a great way to evaluate their understanding of the concept and give the teacher a good idea on who needs more support.
Connection to IPTS Standard: The quiz meets teaching Standard 7, which states, "The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student." By evaluating what was taught it will give me feedback on student development of the concept as well as student growth.
Self-Evaluation: Flipped Classroom has encouraged me, as a future educator, to give my students a more profound understanding on a certain concept. Working with English Language Learners makes this artifact an even more amazing tool, filled with visuals and student controlled pacing. Students are able to replay as many times as they wish giving them the time necessary to grasp a concept. This artifact inspired me as a future educator and gave me so many ideas to engage my student's learning. I am thrilled on the outcome of this innovative technology tool and I cannot wait to implement it in my future lessons.
