Standard 3 - Planning for Differentiated Instruction – The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.
Math SIOP Lesson Plan
Rationale: This first artifact is a Math SIOP Lesson Plan that I created in my AEDU 342 ESL course. It is a lesson for adding two-digit numbers involving properties of operations and breaking numbers apart using place value.
Connection to IPTS Standard: This lesson plan was designed "based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context".
Self-Evaluation: I learned that Math also involves strong command in language and there needs to be bridging strategies to link both the L1 and L2. Solving word problems, following instructions, and understanding using mathematical vocabulary correctly requires a language proficiency that may exceed our expectation, which is why the bridge is crucial in math lessons.
Social Studies Assessment
Rationale: This second artifact was created in my AEDU 345 ESL course. This is a differentiated technology supported social studies assessment. I incorporated the use of Google Jamboard to provide a visual connection and further assist students with comprehension. I decided to incorporate images as part of the assessment because it not only will increase their comprehension, it will reduce their extreme test anxiety and it can even help them with decoding. This assessment helps me as the teacher scaffold tasks for my culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
Connection to IPTS Standard: I made sure to plan and design an assessment "based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context".
Self-Evaluation: I learned the importance of providing visuals for CDL students to further comprehend the material. Also, I realized the benefits technology offers when it comes to creating assessments and overall lessons for CDL students.
