MY APPROACH
MY APPROACH
Here you'll find some of the strategies and big ideas that guide my practice. I leverage these approaches in my classroom to create an atmosphere where everyone feels at home and is ready to learn!
Creating community is a priority for me. I want my classroom to feel like home for all of my students. We'll focus on valuing everyone's unique perspectives and incorporating everyone's voices into our environment, curriculum, and conversations. Go TEAM!
I create an environment where students are not afraid to make mistakes because they know mistakes make our brains grow. We'll explore math in a way that allows students to engage from where they are and leverage mistakes to build that brain muscle!

Universal Design for Learning is a model for inclusive instruction. By offering students multiple means of Engagement, Representation, Action & Expression, we open the door to create lifelong learners who can assess their own learning needs, manage their own progress, and persevere through complex tasks.
Let's talk brain science! Students learn best when they are given opportunities to connect material to their cultural frame of reference, to learn in context that is meaningful and relevant to them. Learn more about the science of building cognitive capacity with CRT here.
There is a place for mindfulness in every classroom - yes, even in Math! We'll tap into how our bodies feel to recognize when it's time to persevere, when it's time to challenge a limiting belief, and when it's time for a break.
Having fun creates energy and engagement, which leads to achievement. In my classroom, smiles and laughter are important signs of success!
A true appreciation for diversity acknowledges that the experience of all students (and teachers!) is enhanced by learning in community with people of various abilities, cultures, thoughts, and experiences. In order to nurture diversity in the classroom, equity and inclusion must be in the fabric of our teaching practices and the environments we create. The below presentation captures my beliefs about diversity, equity, and inclusion and how I put these concepts into practice for the benefit of ALL in my learning community.
