The IWGDM is a working group of the IWA/IAHR Joint Committee on Urban Drainage (JCUD). IWGDM aims to furthering research and disseminating knowledge and technology related to data collection and modelling of urban drainage systems. This working group organises a conference known as the International Conference on Urban Drainage Modelling (UDM)
Please browse the content for details of past meetings and workshops.
The International Working Group on Data and Models (IWGDM) is looking for a new Secretary to begin their term right after the International Conference on Urban Drainage Modelling (UDM) 2025 in Innsbruck.
This is a 3-year role, after which you may transition into the Chair position of the group.
You’ll be working closely with the incoming Chair, Ico Broekhuizen, to:
- Organise a few regular meetings
- Discuss and coordinate future group activities
- Keep communication flowing between members
Time commitment: Light and manageable – currently, the Chair and Secretary meet every two months and exchange a couple of emails in between.
If you’d like to actively contribute to the IWGDM community and help shape its future, please get in touch with Ico (ico.broekhuizen@ltu.se) or Joao (JoaoPaulo.Leitao@eawag.ch).
Let’s keep advancing collaboration in urban drainage modelling together!
The next IWGDM group meeting will take place at UDM 2025 on 16th September 2025, 17:45 (room HSB4). We are looking forward to see many of you and have a nice discussion on current and future activities on urban drainage models and data. A tentative agenda will be provided soon. Please share this info with your colleagues!
There are a few very interesting workshops at UDM 2025! Some are organised by members of the IWGDM!
workshop 3 Parameter estimation for hydraulic urban drainage models - a virtual ring test is organised by Stefan Kroll (stefan.kroll@aquafin.be | Aquafin, Belgium), Katharina Teuber (katharina.teuber@jade-hs.de | Jade University of Applied Sciences, Germany) and João P. Leitão (joaopaulo.leitao@eawag.ch | Eawag, Switzerland).
How good is your method for placing NBS in a drainage network? We are pleased to present the Combat of Retrofitting Urban Drainage Networks with Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) organised as part of the Urban Drainage Modelling Conference (UDM) 2025 in Innsbruck, Austria. The Combat seeks to evaluate and compare solutions derived from various integration methods, aiming to unlock the full potential of NBS in optimizing the performance and amplifying the benefits and co-benefits of urban drainage systems. The best-performing teams will be honored during the UDM closing ceremony. Additionally, the case study, along with anonymized results, will be included in a collaborative publication featuring all Combat participants.
For more information, the competition rules and the case study are available on the conference webpage via https://www.uibk.ac.at/en/congress/udm2025/udm-nbs-combat . We are looking forward to your participation!
Abstract submission for the next UDM conference is already open! The next UDM conference will take place in 2025 in Innsbruck (Austria). For information, visit https://www.udm2025.org

Two workshops organised by members of the IWGDM will take place on 3rd July 2023 during Novatech 2023 (Lyon, France):
the workshop Urban wet-weather flows: Designing the water quality monitoring of the future is organised by Luca Vezzaro (luve@dtu.dk | DTU, Denmark) and Lena Mutzner (lena.mutzner@eawag.ch | Eawag, Switzerland).
the workshop Fast models for urban flood simulations: future perspectives in the era of ubiquitous data is organised by João P. Leitão (joaopaulo.leitao@eawag.ch | Eawag, Switzerland), Peter Bach (peter.bach@eawag.ch | Eawag, Switzerland) and Ana Deletic (ana.deletic@qut.edu.au | QUT, Australia).
Please visit the workshop webpages and get in touch with organisers to obtain additional information about the workshops.
Congratulations to Jean-David Therrien (and the team) for the Best student paper award: "Using the right wastewater characteristics for early COVID-19 pandemic warning and forecast using deep machine-learning"
