Belgrade 2012

Meeting agenda and minutes

  • Introductions
    • As usual, we went around the room and learnt about what each group had been up since our last conference (about 9 months since ICUD – Brazil). Appendix A outlines the items which were discussed.
  • Housekeeping & website
    • Membership/group email list – it was agreed that we would have a group email list which is accessible to all members. The email list can be obtained from the email which contained this attachment, or from the website (see below).
    • Website – it was decided that Monash will again host the website. The website will contain the above membership list and a list of joint publications which the group has produced (only if two or more groups from the WG are involved). The website shall also contain links to each group’s websites. Other items include a page for job postings.
  • Money/funding
    • Currently, the group has around 600AUD / 490 EUR. There seems to be some profit from the UDM workshop on uPs – JLBK to confirm.
    • We agreed that we would use the money to provide a prize based upon the best paper at the next conference. The prize will be available to PhD students, from any country.
  • Next workshop
    • There will be a Micropollutant (uP) workshop held at Novatech 2013.
    • There also seems to be interest in the topic of uncertainties in data and modelling. As such, if there is still interest we will organise a workshop at Novatech.
    • There is likely to be an informatics workshop in Singapore – Wolfgang Rauch will be announcing this.
  • Next conference
    • Two groups were interested in hosting the next UDM: Innsbruck and Laval. After a good discussion, the decision was that Université Laval will host the next UDM – possibly in Sept.
  • Other items – announcement for 2nd WR conference in Singapore. >700 abstracts. 350 abstracts not even close to being related to the conference. For more information, visit: http://www.waterresearchconference.com/

Appendix A – summary of working group partners

  • Canada (Laval)
    • Real-time control…Manitoba … all combined sewers are going to be monitored
    • Number of groups developing online monitoring
  • France/Lyon (INSA and LEESU)
    • Software development (in en and fr) –…available for collaboration…Canoe and Evohe. Contact INSA for more information.
    • Modelling uncertainty assessment with parameters…main idea for the next year is to reformulate models (INSA)
    • uP – collaborations with Paris and Nord…
    • If everything goes well, INSA (&LEESU?) will start a 3yr study on Pharms. Great opportunity at a hospital which has a single pipe which could be monitored which only has hospital effluent.
    • Developed a new model – open source for modelling the total urban water cycle…contact LEESU for more information.
    • Working with rainfall data
    • New project which may work on determining more information about the build-up rates of pollutants. Working with atmospheric experts to determine this; some focus on traffic. Doing some uP here (hydrocarbons)
  • Denmark (DTU)
    • Big storms, flooding and no government…hectic, but opportunities.
    • uPs – finished the project on sources. Heidi Birch finished her PhD on monitoring and modelling of uP.
    • Online modelling and forecasting for online control of sewers, treatment plants and maybe in the end flooding.
    • Flood risk assessment – adapting urban infrastructure to future climates.
    • Working on grey box modelling
  • UK (Bradford and Sheffield)
    • Development of flow monitors (Bradford)
    • Alma - Rain gauge network (Bradford)…small scale field – 16 gauges in very close proximity
    • Sheffield – green roof models…not just empirical, but process based models. Plan is to move from just the green roof context to other WSUD/SUDS.
    • Sheffield – use of CFD tools is continuing. Plan is to extend this to other hydrodynamic modelling of ponds and wetlands etc.
    • Sheffield – modelling of green roof systems…working with evapotranspiration…
  • Netherlands (TU Delft)
    • 8 PhDs in urban drainage.
    • Risk based approach for design and operation of the entire urban drainage system
    • Testing different control strategies for control of the integrated water system
    • Rainfall measurements – new radar – better spatial resolution – aim is to get good data for input to hydrodynamic models
  • Portugal (DEC)
    • Experimental urban catchment studies. Experimental facility in lab.
    • Involved in prepared.
  • Spain (tecnicsassociats)
    • Small company. Developing open source tools – integration at a national level.
  • Austria (Innsbruck)
    • Renewal of urban infrastructure
    • Modelling of urban development – collaboration with Denmark, Newcastle, etc…
    • Parallel of various urban water drainage models.
    • Smooth Particle hydrodynamics – graphic cards stuff…
    • Data – three unis together…river water quality measurements…waiting for data!!!
  • Italy (Enna Kore)
    • Uncertainty in modelling
    • Flooding propagation in urban areas – still on uncertainty tho. Uncertainty based model of flooding propagation.
    • uP in sediments – looking at hydrodynamic modelling of lakes and reservoirs…model is available for sharing. Possibly will be using smooth particle hydrodynamics.
  • Sweden (LUT)
    • Large to small catchment monitoring. Over 8 different regions/muni. Mainly about water quality.
  • Australia (Monash)
    • still working on uncertainties
