-Weekly Update-
"For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome" 1 John 5:3
I'm sure another message about love on Valentine's Day is the last thing anyone wants to hear, but how can I not mention it?! Love is so extremely central to the Christian life that all of the law and prophets can be summarized in it!
Don't get me wrong, there are many demonic and perverted abuses of the term "love", but we are not left to wonder what it is that the Bible intends by it. Instead, we can be amazed and perplexed at the incomprehensible love that God shows us and calls us to live in! I'm unable to capture in words the majesty and righteousness of God that must be present to compel Him to step down from heaven, into the disease-stricken mess of humanity, and provide a self-sacrificial way of being reconciled to Him and healed from the terminal oppression of sin!
Okay, now I'll proceed with the update! :)
"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends"
1 Corinthians 13:4-8a
-Watery Witness-
This Sunday we were blessed to join Zach in the celebration of his new life with Christ as he was water baptized and publicly expressed his change in trajectory and commitment to a new way of living and dying! While water baptism is not necessary for salvation, it can be such a wonderful tool of evangelism to those in your life as you provide a witness and testimony of the revelation and power at work within you! Please pray that any seeds planted or watered through the witness of Zach's testimony would take root and grow within their heart!

-Whiteboards at Work-
This past week, Nick and I had great success with whiteboard evangelism! We started with a new question for this week, "Religion or Spirituality?", and we got great responses! It was fascinating to hear different students share their religious perspectives and how that influences their stance on religion vs spirituality. If this question seems redundant, let me try to clarify the connotational nuance of these words currently. Religion is often being associated with the structural order and systematic beliefs of people, often containing rituals, practices, and creeds. Spirituality is often viewed as a more personal and malleable experience with something beyond mere matter. I was not surprised to find in our conversations that many students tended towards spirituality as it allows for the greatest amount of autonomy for the individual as they can pick and choose for themselves what they want. However, I was a little surprised to see how many people recognized value in the structures of religion. It was fascinating to me that many of the people we talked to did not seem opposed to the presence of religious structures and standards but actually desired to involve that with their more nuanced spiritual encounters.
It was very rainy this week, so Nick and I tried a new approach with a small $2 whiteboard set up at our table in a coffee shop. This seemed to also work well, but awareness of different coffee shops environment's plays a large role in its effectiveness.
-City Lights-
This week we visited the residents at City Lights for Valentine's Day Bingo and meal as well as our usual help with food distribution and prayer meeting. We always have such a great time serving at City Lights and are especially grateful for the opportunity to share a meal with them! For the past few weeks, Nick, Viany, and I have been able to share lunch with a group of residents as we pray and encourage each other with scripture! There are changes in management in City Lights that have been increasing stress among the residents and volunteers as rent is dramatically increased as well as various changes that cause disruptions.
In today's prayer meeting over lunch, we discussed how we can best engage with challenging circumstances and with those who oppose us. It was the perfect occasion for this discussion as we talked and prayed about loving our neighbor and our enemies. Many great things are at work within City Lights, but the impacts of these new management changes have the potential to create new challenges and barriers that we have not had thus far. Please pray for the residents and volunteers at City Lights as they work to navigate these changes. Please pray that the new management would return the rent to manageable rates for these people and not push people out on the streets in their pursuit of profit.

*The epic community - Devil May Cry*
-Devil May Cry-
This week in our DMC (disciple-making community) titled, "Devil May Cry", we shared with each other our homework from the previous week. This homework was to create a concise expression of the gospel message that we will have prepared to share with those we talk to. We were challenged to keep it around one minute long, and this week our "homework" is to share this with five people throughout the week. We've already practiced sharing a three-minute version of our awakening to Jesus' call, but this week we will practice sharing the main message of Jesus with other people. When did you begin taking Jesus seriously, and how has your life changed? How would you summarize the main message of Jesus?
-Love for the Lepers-
This week, we continued our meetings with *Anthony and got him a full Bible of his own! We had a great time together as we prayed together and dialogued about the passages *Anthony had been reading in Mark. He had so many great questions, but one question that was significant was about the man whom Jesus healed of leprosy. *Anthony asked what leprosy was, so we shared not only about the disease, but also about the cultural responses to lepers. We continued to dialogue about this and *Anthony began to realize how powerful this was. Not only was Jesus unafraid of the ceremonially unclean state of the leper, but He also, by touching the leper, made him clean. Instead of Jesus becoming unclean by touching the leper, the leper became clean by touching Jesus. How powerful is our God!
We continued in our discussion, and *Anthony asked if Jesus' disciples can heal people like Jesus did because he wanted to pray for his dad's ear which has a constant ring. We looked at the passages where Jesus sends the disciples out to heal and cast out demons, as well as the verses about asking God for things we desire. *Anthony was amazed at these passages, and we encouraged him to pray for his dad's ear and ask God to heal it. We also talked about how sometimes God is doing something bigger through an impairment, and might not heal them right now, but that God always wants us to ask Him. God loves it when His children ask Him to be involved in their lives!

Thank you so much for your continued prayer and support of this ministry and training I'm able to participate in here in SoCal! We are all greatly blessed by your generosity and dedication to this ministry!
With love and peace,
