Hi y’all! I’m Dr. Dave Barry, the creator and host of the “I Still Believe in School” Podcast - thanks for visiting the website!
I’m a former preschool and kindergarten teacher and current assistant professor of early childhood education at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. I taught kindergarten in Boston for 10 years and taught Pre-K in Austin for 2 years (one year as an assistant and the other as the lead teacher).
The “I Still Believe in School” podcast is my small way of speaking back to some of the negative talk going on currently about teachers and teaching. This is not to discount the fact that teaching is incredibly challenging and stressful - I even wrote a book about how challenging teaching can be! Rather, this podcast is my attempt at highlighting the positive things about teaching and the great things happening in schools - it is not in any way meant to discount the challenges and stress associated with being a teacher.
Every week, I have a different educator join me on the podcast to share their experience, their best advice, and ultimately why - even despite the challenges - they still believe in school.
But that’s not all!
Guests of the podcast also play a trivia game related to the subject or grade level they teach (or taught). For every question a guest answers correctly, I donate $10 to a Donors Choose project of the guest’s choosing (don’t know about Donors Choose? Click here to learn more about Donors Choose and how they help teachers and students across the US!).
In all, I see this podcast as one way I can shine a spotlight on the incredible teachers that I know who have lots to offer current, incoming, and future generations of teachers while supporting the fundraising efforts of classroom teachers across the US.
