Strategy 3 Teaching Core Vocabulary

WHAT?

Core Vocabulary

- refers to words used with high frequency

- are vocabulary that make up about 75-80% of the words we use everyday

- should be a main part of AAC because it allows for most flexibility across situations

- examples include: I, WANT, HELP, OPEN, MORE, LIKE, GO, STOP, IN, YES, NO

Fringe Vocabulary

- specific nouns, people’s names, places used in low-frequency situations

- personal vocab related to a person’s needs, interests, work, school and community

WHY?

Core Vocabulary allows for people to communicate across all situations, settings and with all communication partners. Intentional teaching of Core Vocabulary in daily routines can help students learn to use Core Vocabulary for more effective communication.

HOW?

Chart explaining how to teach an example core word open. First introduce the new word with Aided language stimulation. The example is, I will ensure that the individual is looking at the AAC device when I model the word open - open the bottle, open the door. Second, teach the new word with explicit instruction activities. The example is, emphasize the word open by using a slightly louder tone and exaggerating my movements while turning the bottle cap or opening the car door.Third, elaborate on the new word with engaging practice activities. The example is, model the word open when opening the fridge or cupboard to get the individual's food or opening a drawer to access a favorite toy. Fourth, provide repeated exposure to the new word on an ongoing basis. The example is, repeat open daily and use open in different ways, including opening an app on the iPad and going to a shop that is open. Last, check for understanding and reteach as necessary. The example is, monitor if the individual understands open and responds accordingly in our interactions at home. Observe if the individual starts using the word open independently.
