Some of our students have core books that the SLP has created for a student at school. This book has been shown to be helpful in a variety of ways, depending on your child:
Helps them to understand what you are saying as you point to pictures while you talk.
Helps them to think of words to say.
Helps them be understood if they are saying something and pointing while they talk.
Helps them expand their language using core words.
Helps them use correct grammar or word order.
Helps them with literacy as they are reading the words at times.
This can be used at home too. The top of the book has core words and the bottom of the book has pages for fringe vocabulary. If you would like a fringe page created for items at home please contact your child's SLP. Our students need lots of aided language stimulation to learn, understand and use language.
Some of our students have a book with individual pictures on Velcro in which they exchange either the picture or the strip with the communication partner. It is a very structured, research-based system in which the student learns the communication process. PECS has been shown to be helpful in a variety of ways, depending on your child:
Helps them to understand the power of language - that their actions can cause other people to give them what they want.
Helps them to recognize and interact with a communication partner.
Helps them to increase verbal skills - research: https://pecsusa.com/research-topic/pecs-and-verbal-behavior/
Helps them increase their initiation skills.
Helps them learn that pictures have meaning.
Help them learn to be persistent with positive communication behaviors to get their needs met.
This book can be used at home too. If you would like pictures created for items at home please contact your child's SLP. Our students need lots of repetition throughout their day with a variety of items/activities to learn and generalize the system.
