Brisbane 2018

We have only a few weeks to go until the next IPSA World Congress in Brisbane and I am very excited to announce that we have received a very large number of excellent paper proposals for the IPSA 2018!

The conference programme will be packed with many excellent panels and, of course, we hope that you will also attend our 2018 business meeting. The RC14 Business Meeting will take place on Monday, July 23 2018 12:45 - 13:45. It will take place in room Foyer / GH-T12, same room as the panel [RC14.12] Everyday Politics of Race and Ethnicity preceding the meeting (23-07-2018 | 11:00 - 12:45). If you have any suggestions for items to be put on the agenda, please email them to rc14.ipsa@gmail.com by Friday 20 July; I’ll circulate the agenda for the meeting in due course.

To accommodate so many proposals, Allison and I have been working around many logistical issues and, while several panels needed disbanding following the deadline in registration, RC14 again has been one of the most prolific groups at the Congress: We now have the following nineteen panels:

1. Rethinking Multicultural Theories in the Age of New Migrants and Refugees

2. Causes and Consequences of Ethnic Politics

3. Contemporary Challenges: Multiethnic India

4. Contemporary Challenges: Refugees and Displaced People

5. Ethnic Politics After Communism

6. Everyday Politics of Race and Ethnicity

7. Gender, Peace and Post-Conflict Institutions

8. Institutional Design after Conflict: The Exclusion amid Inclusion Dilemma

9. LGBTQ Politics and Identities in the Middle East and North Africa

10. Migration and Integration of Labour Force in Asia and Europe: Challenges and Opportunities

11. Negotiating Ethnic Conflict in Deeply Divided Places: From Bargaining to Power-Sharing

12. Non-Ethnic Mobilization in Divided Societies

13. Political Representation in Diverse Societies

14. Secessionist Parties Across Borders

15. Studying Conflict-Generated Diasporas: Conceptual and Methodological Challenges

16. The Politics of Immigration, Asylum, and Ethnicity: Australia and Canada in Comparative Perspective

17. Transformation of Democratic Regimes: Towards Greater Accountability?

18. When Diversity Meets Homogeneity: Collating Experiences from Ground-up

19. When States Take Rights Back: Questioning the Public Justifications of Citizenship Revocation

Building upon the long-standing relationship between the RC14 and the journal “Nationalism and Ethnic Politics” (NEP) under the editorship of Adrian Guelke, previous Chair of the RC 14 and a friend to many of us, Allison McCulloch and I have decided to consolidate this relationship further. We would like to announce the Prize for the Best Paper presented at the Congress — We invite the chairs of sessions to make recommendations to the Chair and Vice-Chair of the RC, including a short (150 word) appraisal of paper’s merits and contributions. The paper would then be favourably received by NEP (It will have to pass peer review prior to publication). Please direct your nominations to rc14.ipsa@gmail.com by Friday 20 July. The Prize winner will be announced at the RC’s Business meeting.
