When considering Angels as characters, it is important to recognize some aspects of Angelic existence that influence how they play as characters. Here are some guideline tips for Angels.
Angels are part of the larger plan, manifestations of divine will that resonate as part of the symphony. The choices they make disturb the world around them, often in little ways, but acts of excessive manipulation, especially destruction, cause disturbances in the world around them.
Angels cannot act directly in the world without disturbing the symphony, so they tend to act through others. They are best at enabling others to perform their best, rather than taking actions themselves.
Angels all resonate in some way with the symphony and this means they sense the world different from humans. The ability to understand completely the relationship dynamics in a room or sense whether any statement is true changes the way one perceives the world.
As immortal beings, Angels do not dwell too much on the past, being more focused on things that are going on in the present. Neither are they too focused on the future, not pressured by mortal concerns of running out of time. They plan for what comes next and learn from the past, but they do not count time like mortals do.
Angels live in constant awareness of their own dark potential. They know that Demons would not exist if Angels could not fall to selfishness. This in some ways is their only potential act of free will.
Seraphim (The Most Holy) Seraphim[singular: Seraph] are the highest choir of Angels and are gifted with an attunement to the truths in the Symphony, able to sense when people lie or try to deceive. They often fill the leadership roles in the hierarchy of Heaven, and expect deference from those below them. Fallen Seraphim are known as Balseraphs.
Cherubim (The Guardians) Cherubim [singular: Cherub] are guardian angels, attuned to the perils of the symphony and empowered to protect those who are in danger. Cherubim are often given assignments to protect and support those in need on Earth. Fallen Cherubim are known as Djinni
Ofanim (The Wheels) Ofanim [singular: Ofanite] are heavenly messengers, able to move elegantly through the world at speeds defying reality. They are constantly in motion and serve to carry the word of God from place to place. Fallen Ofanim are known as Calabim.
Elohim (The Powers) Elohim [singular: Elohite] are aloof and objective, attuned to the balance of perspectives. They are able to distance themselves from self-interest and see through the emotions that cloud perceptions around potential actions and are often assigned to roles of mediation or planning. Fallen Elohim are known as Habbalah.
Malakim (The Virtues) Malakim [singular: Malakite] are warriors, attuned to morality. They can sense guilt and honor on people’s souls and are duty bound to hunt down evil where it lives. All Malakim are bound by oaths of honor that they cannot violate without fracturing their souls. Malakim cannot fall, but those who become too damaged may come under harsh scrutiny.
Kyriotates (The Dominations) Kyriotates [singular: Kyriotate] Kyriotates are attuned to the principle of subjectivity. They are able to split themselves up among different people and animals, experiencing things from multiple points of view. Their tasks are often those that require a multiplicity of perspectives and they are able to move more stealthily than other Angels, as they are not bound to their own vessels, though they must be careful to not harm those they possess. Fallen Kyriotates are known as Shedim.
Mercurians (Friends of Man) Mercurians [singular: Mercurian] Mercurians are the most human of the Angels, attuned to the relationships and politics that exist between people. Mercurians are able to see how people relate to one another. Mercurians are often the most individualistic of Angels and are often sent for missions where a personal touch or guidance is needed. Fallen Mercurians are known as Impudites.
Grigori (The Watchers) Grigori (Singular: Grigori) Grigori were created after the fall to watch for demonic activity on Earth. They bred with humans and created monsters and were all exiled from Heaven. They are no longer made and few still exist.
Whom does your Angel serve? What is that relationship like?
Every Angel has a Superior, who is often the one who created them. The Word of their Superior guides the very existence of the Angel and drives their purpose. Some Angels are the favored children of their superiors, some are the wayward ones that the Superior is always watching.
When was your Angel created?
Not all Angels date back to the beginning of time. Archangels are able to create angels by gathering forces from the world. Most Angels in the world were initially created as Relievers and had to prove themselves. That said, Angels are immortal if not destroyed, so they could have been around a long time.
What role does your character play in the War?
Angels play support roles in Tethers, with very specific tasks given by their Superiors. These are sacred tasks and must be approached with all the power available to them. This can be a serious amount of pressure.
How does your Angel feel about Heaven's goals for the War? Especially their Superior's goals.
Heaven has specific goals for the War, and not all of those are shared equally by all Archangels. What goals does your Angel feel passionately about?
What powers does your character have?
Angels have not just their resonance and superior attunement but may also know songs, other attunements from their superiors or have relics of their own. These powers can help define who a character is.
How does your Angel feel about the Fallen? Do they know any Demons?
Some Angels view Demons as the irredeemable enemy, some have friends who have fallen. Some may have fallen themselves and been redeemed. This leads to very different feelings and approaches to Demons.
What are your Angel's ambitions?
Angels don't make plans like mortals. They do have general plans and intentions, but those ambitions are tempered by Heavenly authority and not pushed by a sense of impending mortality like those of mortals.
