The Industrial Ontologies Foundry was born on Dec 7, 2016, when the first workshop was held by the Systems Integration Division at the National Institute Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, USA. It was speared head by Serm Kulvatunyou, Dmitris Kiritsis, Barry Smith, KC Morris, Paul Witherell, Nenad Ivezic, Evan Wallace. The idea was initially formed by Dmitris Kiritsis, Barry Smith, and Heidi Karray among others. It was motivated by the boiling number of ontology research projects in the engineering domains such that without coordination across the developed ontologies, their visions will be in peril. The first workshop was join by a number of researchers and industry practitioners such as Dassault Systemes and Airbus. The second workshop was held in April 2017. As of October 2017, weekly conference calls are held with over 80 participants in the mailing list.
