Esteban Bermúdez was born and raised in the city of Caguas, Puerto Rico. Since high school he has always been interested in biology, its components, and how they interact to form complex organized systems. With that in mind, he decided to pursue a degree in chemical engineering at the University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez Campus, focusing on its bioengineering aspects. In addition, he aims to become an interdisciplinary scholar, able to incorporate diverse knowledge to approach problems, design projects and find the best solutions. To achieve this, he has become involved with the IEEE’s iGEM Competition team, conducted research in analytical chemistry, and joined the Engineering Student Council. All these experiences will serve as his tools for promoting a culture of problem solvers in the future generations. More specifically, he wishes to extend opportunities for Puerto Ricans in the island who want to stay to create a sustainable, fair, and prosperous economy for all its citizens
When people ask me to describe myself, one of the first things that runs through my mind is a memory from my childhood. I remember having a little Barbie karaoke with the music very loud, singing and dancing until I get tired. I've always been that way, charismatic and passionate about what I do. Over the years, I have found my passion for biology. I am currently on my third year studying Pre-Med at the University of Puerto Rico- Mayagüez Campus. On my second year, I had the opportunity to be part of an investigation, which made me love biology and laboratory work even more. In addition, I took an advanced genetic class which opened my eyes to all the possibilities and applications inside the biology field. In May of 2018 I had the experience of going through the interview process and being selected to be part of the iGem RUM 2018-19 team. I found a place where I could develop myself as a person and as a professional in what I love, surrounded by extremely intelligent and welcoming people. Today, I am part of the Research and Development branch with a focus on programming. It has been a great journey. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for the team.
