Mission

“In iGEM RUM we strive to become leaders in the field of Synthetic Biology and liaison for the dissemination of this knowledge on our island and beyond.”

Synthetic Biology presents the public with necessary tools to develop novel solutions for long-standing problems. As synthetic biologists, we represent the epitome of the unity of STEM areas like no other discipline in the world. As a research team we:

Lead the way to this scientific revolution while maintaining a sense of economic, environmental and social awareness.
Promote our core values: Research and Development, Education, Entrepreneurship and Ethics in Synthetic Biology as a method of progress for our society.
Place value on finding solutions through the joint integration of efforts between the private sector, academic, local, and state communities.

The mission of team iGEM RUM can be summarized in a simple and ambitious phrase: “Synthesizing a Better World”.

Vision

“Team iGEM RUM, a student project, selects and develops an undergraduate interdisciplinary student team capable of resolving relevant and long-standing problems to the Puerto Rican society via the implementation of Synthetic Biology solutions.”

We aspire to become the first Puerto Rican and Caribbean iGEM team that successfully presents a Synthetic Biology project at the iGEM Giant Jamboree Competition and to lead the way for future iGEM teams in our region. Our efforts also focus in transmitting the knowledge gathered during the project to encourage our society into embracing and becoming part of the Synthetic Biology revolution.

Research and Development

Team iGEM RUM main purpose is to produce tangible, well documented and reproducible knowledge and products utilizing Synthetic Biology as a medium for innovation and discovery. It is our aspiration to promote the Research and Development culture at the UPRM Campus, local and regional communities, for it is a tool necessary to individuals and communities alike to achieve progress and prosperity in the competitive market.

Education

Continuous education in the Synthetic Biology discipline is key to achieve our goals as a team. Being the first iGEM team of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, it is expected of us to lead on the dissemination process of Synthetic Biology to other people in our region. From information tables to local high school student mentoring opportunities, in team iGEM RUM we have the passion to educate the rising generation of future scientists our island has to offer.

Ethics

We uphold the notion that our goals, strategies, means for achieving success and actions are to be based in ethical frameworks. To excel at this core value, team iGEM RUM has proposed and partnered up with ethicists, psychologists, and sociologists. Other relevant efforts have been taken to seek professional counsel and approval from Institutional Review Boards (IRB’s), Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBC’s) from the UPRM campus and Responsible Conducts of Research online (RCR’s) courses.

Entrepreneurship

Team iGEM RUM relies heavily on entrepreneurship-driven approaches to generate new Synthetic Biology based solutions to address our region’s long-standing problems. The added value of our team efforts, asides from project findings and results, are the highly skilled young professionals who possess leadership, knowledge, drive and firsthand experience in how to form cutting edge startup business ventures.
