iGEM RUM

Team IGEM RUM is a many year’s initiative that has come to fruition as an effort between UPRM undergraduate students of different majors, compromised UPRM professors and student leaders of the IEEE-EMBS UPRM Student Chapter. Our main objective is to develop an interdisciplinary undergraduate research project in the new field of Synthetic Biology. To do so we would implement island wide findings to establish solutions of long-standing societal problems and present these project findings at the iGEM Giant Jamboree competition.

It is our belief that Synthetic Biology solutions:

• represent the future we aspire to live in
• will be implemented to resolve many of our society’s relevant problems
• are a tool that can generate economic and scientific development when in unison with ethical and social fail-safes

We are currently working towards becoming the Caribbean leaders in Synthetic Biology, university research and developing a robust “DIY iGEM Team Module” that all sectors of society can access to gain experience and engage in STEM.
