ABOUT US:

We are IEM’s decorated student chapter of the Indian Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE), a major national organization in the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry. As a student chapter, we represent IEM’s ME, EE and EEE student body and serve as a platform to provide industry exposure to our student members. We offer insightful technical talks, upskilling workshops, direct connection to industry professionals, job and internship opportunities, as well as the opportunity to participate in several national and international competitions, such as NSDC, SRPG, HVAC Hackathon, aQuest, Racon and many more. We also conduct internal events such as technical event TAAPMAAN and cultural event URJAAMAAN to engage, inspire and motivate all students to compete, learn and excel. We also collaborate with other ISHRAE chapters and international organizations such as ASHRAE and CYPE Spain to bring global exposure to our members. ISHRAE IEM Model Student Chapter has won the Best Student Chapter Award of ISHRAE Kolkata 4 times in a row from 2018 to 2021, and was awarded the prestigious Model Student Chapter accolade by ISHRAE HQ, as we have continually proven with our initiative, drive and accomplishments, to be the gold standard for student chapters across the nation.


CHAPTER INSTALLATION:

Our storied legacy began on 17th January 2015, when the Chapter was installed. Spearheaded by our Faculty Advisor Mr. Gunjan Kumar and the first Core Working Committee (CWC), led by our first President, Mr. Alomoy Banerjee.

ISHRAE IEM MODEL STUDENT CHAPTER - OVER THE YEARS:

Over the past six years, ISHRAE IEM Model Student Chapter has established a record of excellence. We bagged several awards and laurels such as:

1. Victory in aQuest from 2016 to 2020.

2. Runners – up in RefCold India Global Poster Competition from 2018 to 2020.

3. Received 6 awards, including victories at RACON from 2017 to 2019.

4. Won the National Student Design Competition (NSDC) in 2018 and 2019, and secured third place in

2020.

5. Won MAKAUT’s prestigious Best Project Award.

6. Conducted several webinars, technical talks and site visits, both physically and virtually.

7. Won ISHRAE Kolkata’s Best Student Chapter Award 4 years in a row from 2018 to 2021, and, of

course, we became ISHRAE HQ’s Model Student Chapter.

8. On top of all this, secured funding for several projects through the Student Research Project Grant, which we achieved this year as well.

This was, of course, made possible by our members, whose numbers have grown steadily and we acquired nearly 120 members this year alone.


OUR MOTTO:

ISHRAE IEM Model Student Chapter aims to be the premier platform for its members to receive exposure to the HVAC Industry, connect with industry leaders and find opportunities for learning, growth and competition through technical talks, workshops and national/international challenges and contests. We aim to uphold and further a legacy of excellence in all fronts, and honor our title of Model Student Chapter by developing our members into technically sound leaders and communicators, ready to be at the forefront of the industry.

INTERNAL ACTIVITIES:

ISHRAE IEM Model Student Chapter believes in instilling competitive spirit and providing strong technical skills in all its members from a grassroots level, so they can perform their best in external competitions. Our Intra – college technical event “TAAPMAAN – Feel the Heat” was inaugurated in 2016 for this very purpose, and has grown every year in scope and participation. The event celebrates Student Day and the spirit of HVAC with a Facebook quiz, a Heat Load Challenge, an Energy Conservation and Automation Challenge, and HVAC Quiz Competition later renamed to BBG Memorial Quiz in memory of our beloved Late Prof. B.B. Ghosh. There is also HVAC – COOL Innovative Presentation Competition in partnership with ASHRAE and our newest event, CAD – O – TRIVIA, which is exclusive to second year students and tests their knowledge of coding, AutoCAD and manufacturing processes. These are accompanied by enriching technical talks with bodies like the Prem Jain Memorial Trust as well as our very own technical article series, highlighting the technical achievements of our members. These events become a special occasion as our beloved alumni come to judge the events, provide their valuable experience and connect with their juniors.


NEW INITIATIVES – URJAAMAAN CULTURAL COMPETITION:

This year we introduced the cultural counterpart to TAAPMAAN in the form of ‘URJAAMAAN – Power Your Passion” to celebrate and showcase the artistic talents of our members and other IEM students. It features photography, sketching, poetry, singing and dancing, and has been received very positively by the entire student body.


NATIONAL EVENTS:

ISHRAE IEM Model Student Chapter opens the door to many regional and national competitions, design challenges and events for its members. Activities hosted by ISHRAE include National Student Design Competition (NSDC), where students must design and innovate upon an air conditioning system for a specified type of building, such as school, IT building or hospital; Student Research Project Grant (SRPG) for final year students, where they present their innovative idea and work in front of a panel of experts to try and secure funding for their project, and HVAC&R Hackathon, which is new for 2021 and requires participants to present and develop a solution for a problem statement of their choice from some set categories. Other national events include aQuest, RACON, and Solar Decathlon India, and our members have repeatedly excelled in all of the above events.


NEW INITIATIVES - SOLAR DECATHLON INDIA:

Solar Decathlon India is a 9 – month long mega – competition organized by the IUSSTF, IIHS and AEEE with the aim to turn environmentally – conscious engineers and architects into leaders of the climate – aware age. Each team has a primary institute which collaborates with partner institutes, a project partner that provides details of a real – life building site to be worked on and industry partners who lend their valuable experience in different segments. Students must prepare deliverable reports on 10 different sub – domains (hence the name “Decathlon”) including energy, heat, water, innovation, communication and architecture. Since its inception in 2020, our faculty advisor Mr. Gunjan Kumar has led students of IEM and other institutes such as NIT Raipur, JGEC and Om Dayal Group of Institutions in IEM’s “Team Nivas”, who participated in the “Multi – family housing” segment and became finalists in their very first year of participation, collaborating with project partner Mahindra LifeSpace Developers and several industry partners. Due to his perseverance, leadership and guidance, Mr. Gunjan Kumar was awarded the “Outstanding Faculty” award. This year, we are participating again as “Team Nivas 2.0” with a burning desire to win, once again partnering with Mahindra LifeSpace and NIT Raipur, as well as new collaborations with Ashoka School of Planning & Architecture (ASPA) and many more coming up.


INTERNATIONAL EVENTS:

Despite being affiliated with a national organization, ISHRAE IEM Model Student Chapter brings members several international opportunities through connections, alumni and initiative – driven participation. International competitions include RefCold India Global Student Poster Competition, where students across the world show off their creativity and design HVAC – related awareness posters. Our members also get to attend international conferences, tours and site visits through events like aQuest. We also collaborate with organizations like D2O and CYPE Spain in order to provide upskilling and internship opportunities for our valued student members.


NEW INITIATIVES – ASHRAE COLLABORATION:

ISHRAE IEM Model Student Chapter is collaborating with the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) through the newly – established ASHRAE IEM Student Branch. This brings opportunities such as new internal events, international technical talks, student activities travel grants, publication opportunities in the ASHRAE Journal, competitions and project funding grants.


SHOWCASES AND PROJECTS:

Over the years ISHRAE IEM Model Student Chapter students have presented their practical skills and innovative ideas in a myriad of showcases, workshops and project competitions. In 2019 we won MAKAUT’s Best Project Award for a solar powered fruit ripening chamber. This project even made it to the final round of the AICTE Vishwakarma Awards. Since our inception we have secured project grants via SRPG several times, sometimes multiple teams in the same year. We have also done workshops such as brazing, heat load, pvsyst, MATLAB and ener.gyplus software, as well as HVAC product showcase under ISHRAE Kolkata MoU.


INDUSTRY CONNECTIONS:

By nature, ISHRAE IEM Model Student Chapter is a hotbed for forming meaningful connections with some of the most experienced, helpful and technically sound professionals from the HVAC&R industry. Some of the eminent people that regularly collaborate with the Chapter and its members include Mr. Dipak Barma (President, ASHRAE East India Chapter), Mr. Ashu Gupta (Co – founder, D2O), Mr. PK Sen (VP, Sterling & Wilson), Mr. K. K. Mitra (President, Lloyd Insulation) and many more. Some of our established alumni include Mr. Souram Guha (Site & Sales Engineer, BELL Cooling Towers), Mr. Shuvam Kangsabanik (Project coordinator, Voltas), Mr. Debdut Bosu (Paharpur Cooling Towers) and many others.


VISION FOR THE FUTURE:

ISHRAE IEM Model Student Chapter will strive to extend its history of excellence and continue to be the shining model for all other chapters to aspire towards. With our recent collaborations and initiatives, we will expand our scope to unprecedented levels, including international opportunities and partnerships with several established industry and academic institutions. We will continue to dominate the competitions we already partake in and target new frontiers such as Solar Decathlon India. And, of course, we shall continue to develop our members into technically sound leaders and pioneers in not just the HVAC&R industry, but any field that they choose to join.
