Centre for Research and Innovation ( CRI)

Department established Centre for Research and Innovation CRI in 2016 to coordinate all research work, prototype development, departmental Innovative project, research grant, funded project. This centre successfully established two research labs named 3D Printing Laboratory, Energy Simulation & Sustainability Laboratory and also one product development laboratory; HVAC Innovation Lab for product showcase & product development was established.

3D Printing Laboratory

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has become one of the key technologies in engineering, enabling complex geometric or organic shaped parts to be designed on a computer and built with a fully-automated manufacturing process. 3D printing Laboratory was established under the department of mechanical engineering in the year 2018. Since its inception 3D printing laboratory is a part of the mechanical design projects and interdisciplinary research work.

Major output

3D printing Olympiad and symposium: 3D printing laboratory under the department of mechanical engineering, IEM has successfully conducted its first workshop on 3D modelling and 3D printing in the year 2018. 3D printing Olympiad and symposium were held in 2019 and 2021 (online mode) with great enthusiasm, having participants from all across the country. 3D printing Olympiad and symposium is a benchmark event to enhance practical skills in 3D modelling and printing among students and professionals. Its main focus is on innovation, design thinking and the uses of emerging technologies in the field of mechanical and related engineering disciplines along with other engineering fields. The event has gained huge popularity among the students and professionals in a very short span of time. ( https://3dpolympiad.com)

Major Projects

3D printing laboratory has executed the following special projects with great success along with regular project works.

1. 3D printed electronically operated prosthetic arm.

2. 3D printing of human skull using 3D scanning technology with the collaboration of medical practitioners.

Energy, Environment & Sustainability (EES) Laboratory

Energy Simulation &Sustainability lab was established at the Mechanical department in 2019 to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration between various Students, faculty members, External Institute, Industry. The research scope is broad with a major focus on Building energy, sustainability, Waste management.

Major Infrastructure: High configuration Energy Simulation computation facility, Energy Simulation software- eQuest( Open source), Energy Plus( Open source), Design builder( Sponsored through solar decathlon India), PVsyst(Open source) CYPE software ( Sponsored through Campus initiative MOU )

Major Output : 1. Successfully executed Net zero Design of Net Zero Energy - Water Multi-housing Family building design research project for Project Partner Mahindra LifeSpace developers.

2. MoU between Institute of Engineering and Management (IEM) and CYPE on 24th October, 2020- Installation of a multi-user educational license for teaching or research use of CYPE programs software for user up to 100 users at any one time., CYPE MEP Suite webinar, CYPE Architectural solution webinar, CYPE Structures Suite webinar.

3. Energy Simulation Software Design builder license through Solar decathlon India.

4. 11 MOU signed with Industry partner for Net Zero design project.

5. Collaboration with Prem Jain Memorial Trust for Hand Book on Plastic Free Campus as Education outreach and Capacity building initiative.

HVAC & R Innovation Laboratory

The HVAC & R Innovation lab was established at the Mechanical Engineering department in 2017 to promote product development and research activity in the thrust area of Heating, Ventilation, air-conditioning, Refrigeration and Cold Chain. The facility will feature multiple HVAC systems components to monitor and enhance real-world Industry environments to connect with HVAC & R and Building services Operation and control.

Major Infrastructure: Computer, HVAC & R Learning resources, Brazing facility, HVAC Industrial components like Air Terminals, Fan Blades, Duct Units, Insulation Product, Plumbing tool etc.

Major Output:

1. MOU was signed with The Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE) on 12th August 2017 for HVAC & R industrial product showcase and various skill development workshops.

2. Research funding approx 3.8 Lakh received through student project research grant.

3. Heat load workshop and Brazing workshop initiated for skill development.

4. Lab Develop product received Best Project award at "4th Regional Science and technology congress "( southern region) 2019.Which is held by 'Department of Science & Technology and Bio - technology, Government of West Bengal & MAKAUT West Bengal ' Also same product qualify for final round of national convention of " CHHATRA VISWAKARMA AWARDS 2019” after competing with 6000 registered team across nation.

5. Twice Research poster received 1st Runner up award at Global poster challenge “Refcold India” Organized by ISHRAE
