Getting to the Venue

Get to Fukuoka Airport (FUK): 

• We strongly recommend booking your flight to the Fukuoka Airport (FUK) for three reasons. 

  • There are frequent daily flights from major international airports in Japan, such as Haneda (HND), Kansai (KIX), and Nagoya (NGO). 

  • There are direct international flights from major Asian airports, such as Singapore (SIN), Bangkok (BKK), Hong Kong (HKG), Shanghai (PVG), Seoul (ICN), Taipei (TPE), and others. 

  • A trip from any other local airports to Shimonoseki is too complicated, even for Japanese inhabitants. We cannot recommend them unless you're a very frequent visitor to Japan.

Subway: Fukuoka Airport → Hakata JR station (5 min)

• The subway station is directly connected to the Domestic Terminal Building of the Fukuoka airport.

• You may purchase a 260 JPY one-way ticket from a ticket vending machine, or get a physical/digital Suica (or any other type of travel IC card).

• Hakata JR (Japan Railway) Station is at the heart of Fukuoka, where a multilingual desk for foreign tourists is available when you need help.

Shinkansen: Hakata JR Station → Kokura JR Station (16 min). 

• Yes, it is the famous Japanese Bullet Train! 

• Note that Shinkansen has an independent ticket system from local trains, which means you will need to purchase a separate Shinkansen ticket. Your Suica cannot be used for riding a Shinkansen. 

Local JR train: Kokura JR Station → Shimonoseki JR Station (15-20 min). 

• Recommended transportation route: Get out of the Shinkansen station gateway with your Shinkansen ticket, and then enter the local train area.

  • For local trains, you may use your Suica or purchase a 340 JPY one-way ticket at the vending machine outside the gateway.

  • There is another transportation gateway directly connecting the Shinkansen and the local train areas, but it might be complicated for first-time visitors to get through. 

• The train runs through the undersea tunnel of the Kanmon Straits. 

Local Bus/Taxi: Shimonoseki JR Station (East Exit) → the Venue (8 min)

• You're almost at the destination. 

• Taxi costs around 1200 JPY.

• Local bus:  Sanden Bus No. 1, 2, 3, or 4 bound for Karato.  Note that the English announcement may not be available on the bus.

Local train: Kokura JR Station → Mojikō JR Station (15 min).

Walk to the Ferry terminal (the Mojikō Pier/Marine Gate Moji, 3 min from Mojikō JR Station). 

Kanmon Ferry (5 min): Mojikō → Karato.  

• Purchase a 400 JPY one-way ticket from the vending machine at the ferry terminal. See the Kanmon Ferry website for further details.

• You will get off right in front of the Shimonoseki Grand Hotel.
