The conference venue is the Shimonoseki Grand Hotel.
Shimonoseki is a coastal city at the southwestern tip of Japan’s main island of Honshu, facing the Kanmon Strait between Honshu and Kyushu Island.
The hotel is located just in front of the Kanmon Straits. It is also within walking distance of the Karato Fish Market, the Kamon Wharf, the Kaikyokan (Shimonoseki Marine Science Museum), and the Former British Consulate in Shimonoseki. From the pier in front of the hotel, you can take a ferry to the Moji Port (5 min) and the Ganryu-jima (10 min).
Given the superb location of the hotel, we recommend reserving a room in the Shimonoseki Grand Hotel. Cancellations and full refunds for hotel reservations made through our registration system are available up to 21 days before check-in. Therefore, we encourage you to reserve your room when completing your registration. It is on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you search for the directions to Shimonoseki on Google Maps, you'll be overwhelmed by the many different routes that appear. I've included our recommendation below.
We strongly recommend booking your flight to the Fukuoka Airport (FUK). Three reasons.
There are frequent daily flights from major international airports in Japan, such as Haneda (HND), Kansai (KIX), and Nagoya (NGO).
There are direct international flights from major Asian airports, such as Singapore (SIN), Bangkok (BKK), Hong Kong (HKG), Shanghai (PVG), Seoul (ICN), Taipei (TPE), and others.
A trip from any other local airports to Shimonoseki is too complicated, even for Japanese inhabitants. We cannot recommend them unless you're a very frequent visitor to Japan.
From the Fukuoka airport, take the subway to the Hakata JR Station (5 min). It is at the heart of Fukuoka, and you'll find a multilingual desk for foreign tourists at the station.
From the Hakata JR Station, take the Shinkansen to the Kokura JR Station (16 min). Yes, it is the famous Japanese Bullet Train!
From the Kokura JR Station, take a local train to the Shimonoseki JR Station (15-20 min). The train runs through the undersea tunnel of the Kanmon Straits.
You're almost at the destination. From the Shimonoseki JR Station, you can either take a taxi or a bus (8 min) to the Shimonoseki Grand Hotel.
It's quite a journey to get to Shimonoseki from your country. But that's why this city hasn't been ravaged by overtourism and retains its authentic local Japanese atmosphere. We promise that you'll be able to enjoy your stay in a historic local town in Japan.
Please check Getting to the Venue page for more details and tips for your trip to Shimonoseki.
