A tool created in the 1940s by social psychologist, Kurt Lewin. The main concept is to analyze the effects a change will have on the organization and if the outcome of the change is worth applying. The system is composed of the field which holds the driving force, restraining force, and the desired state. The system wants to stay in equilibrium and for change to occur the driving force must be strengthened or the restraining force must be weakened. The figure below represent the force field analysis.
The force field analysis is composed of 5 steps to complete the process.
The analysis is limited and should only be used in some situation since certain factors cannot be applied into the analysis. It is still an important tool that HPT practitioners can use but other tools are recommended to be used alongside the force field analysis. Below is an example of a force field analysis.
