Now & Then: 7 West Main Street, Webster, NY
Now
Today, 7 West Main Street is home to the Holistic Health Center, offering Professional Nutrition Services. The building remains a two-story commercial space, continuing its long tradition of serving the Webster community.
Mid-20th Century
From 1941 to the 1960s, the building housed Donald King’s grocery store and meat market, a staple in the village for decades. After King’s tenure, the space transitioned to Babcock Automotive, followed by NAPA Auto Parts, reflecting a shift from food retail to automotive services.
Specht Family Legacy
Before King, the business was operated by Louis Specht, who ran a meat market from 1916 to 1941. His family served the community for 25 years, continuing a tradition started by earlier owners.
Early Meat Market Roots
Prior to the Spechts, the market was run by William A. Smith until 1916, and before him, J.D. Hall. The building was a well-known meat market for many years, anchoring the local food economy.
Late 19th Century Origins
Originally a one-story structure, the building gained its second story sometime after 1898, following the expansion of neighboring Frank M. Jones’s property at 5 West Main Street. This marked a significant transformation in the building’s appearance and utility.
