Now
Currently vacant, 31 West Main Street most recently housed Mane Reflections, a full-service hair salon operated by Penny Swingly and Pat Sidoti. The salon opened at this location in 2003, after Penny’s earlier salon, Cut, Color and Tan, operated at 5 West Main Street starting in 1992. Mane Reflections became a beloved local business, known for its friendly service and community involvement, including support for Relay for Life and other local causes.
Mid-20th Century
In 1946, the Webster Diner opened in an addition built onto the front of the house, marking a shift from residential to commercial use.
Residential Era
Prior to its commercial transformation, the building served as a private residence. It was once the home of Dr. Whittleton, a local physician, and later Barbara Bills, who grew up in the house. Barbara remained a lifelong Webster resident and was remembered fondly by the community upon her passing in 2021.
Architectural Origins
Built between 1864 and 1872 by Dana M. Smith, a tinsmith who operated a stove and hardware business on West Main Street, the house is a vernacular 2½-story structure featuring Italianate and Stick-style detailing. Notable features include round arch windows, square chamfered porch posts, and cut-work woodwork in the gables and corners. It is the only remaining example of Stick-style architecture in the Village of Webster
