To optimise network traffic, the Smart polling feature regulates how frequent and in what time interval information is polled from devices.
NetGateway collects information from registered devices and stores it in its database. How often NetGateway polls information from the devices depends on how many devices are registered and something called “activity rating.” Devices are sorted into groups: high priority, medium priority, and low priority. Newly registered devices are set to high priority. Priorities change based on activity and activities are weighted differently. If activity is consistent throughout, all devices will stay in high priority. Besides newly registered devices, high priority devices are devices that are constantly being used or have critical errors such as a paper jam that would require constant monitoring. Certain parameters, like device alerts, increase activity rating much faster than several A4 prints. Activity rating increases whenever properties on a device change. Ratings increase at a faster rate than they decrease. Therefore, if a device in low priority can move to high priority quickly if activity increases. The high priority group will always be populated and contain the most devices. Activity rates is refreshed every 24 hours and is automatically reduced by half; however, the algorithm will find a balance in activities ratings that ensures high priority slots are allocated first.
NetGateway collects a lot of information from devices. Smart polling regulates the activity and the timing of each poll per device is different and will constantly change depending on activity.

Device alerts, in addition to the intervals provided for the other three categories, can be polled at shorter intervals of 1 minute and 5 minutes.
The interval in which alerts are polled on NetGateway depends on the number of devices registered. Trigger tasks occur whenever the original value does not match with the newly polled value. When there is a mismatch, a trigger task will post the new value to KFS.
