In Davis, individual rental rates are typically less expensive for larger units with many people living in them. For example, it is usually less expensive to live in a 2 bedroom apartment with 4 people, than in a 1 bedroom apartment with 2 people.
If you do not know a lot of people looking for new housing, looking in Facebook groups is one way that you can search for people looking for someone to join their lease or looking for roommates to sign a new lease, so that you can live in a larger unit with more people and have lower rent.

Join Davis housing Facebook groups. Many are private, so you will need to join before you can see the posts.
Look through posts and see if any are in areas you are interested in, meet your budget, have your desired amenities, etc. Make sure you look at each poster's profile to make sure they look like a real person.
Message the person who made the post to see if the room/unit is still available.
Caution! There is often spam on Facebook, especially in groups that are public.
Be careful what links you click on...many of them are unsafe
Do not send anyone money over Facebook Messenger or any other platform before you sign the official lease
If you decide to meet up with someone, meet them in a public place, or bring a friend if you are touring an apartment/house.
