Daniel Flatau 

Daniel was born September 3, 1829, in the village of Rutzcauhr in West Prussia, Germany.  On an old map, the village of Rutzcauhr is close to another village called Flatow. At the end of World War II, this area of West Prussia was given over to Poland. The village of Flatow is now known as Zlotow, Poland. National Geographic (April, 1982) states that when this area was taken over by Poland, the Germans were dispersed.

Daniel married Wilhelmina Bettin before 1855.  She may have been born about 1830 and died before 1869.  Daniel and Wilhelmina had four children: Mathilda, Charles (aka Carl or Charlie), Theodore, and Ida (later known as Blind Ida).

Wilhelmina probably died in West Prussia, Germany.

Daniel married a second wife, Emilia "Regina" Neumann, in 1869.  Regina was born on April 16, 1849, and died on February 26, 1920 (age 70). They had three children: Emil, Louise, and Edward.

On November 3, 1894, Daniel, his wife, Regina, and 17-year-old Louise and 15-year-old Edward boarded the Norddeutscher Lloyd Steamship Company ship at Bremen, Germany, and sailed to the United States, arriving in Baltimore, Maryland. On the ship manifest, Daniel stated he was from the village Rutzcauhr (Germany) and was destined for Fairchild, Wisconsin. The manifest said they were going to join Daniel's brother. However, neither of Daniel's two brothers, Johan or Martin, left West Prussia (Germany).
