The Evangelist Internship Scheme, which is one of the ministry internships in the Diocese, specifically to train and prepare men and women for the ministry of an evangelist in the Diocese of Kuching through spiritual, theological and ministry formation. It will be run by the House of the Epiphany and the Kidurong Anglican Centre in Bintulu in partnership with the various parishes in the Diocese of Kuching.
It will help the interns to:
- work out their calling and prepare for long term ministry
-develop their gifts for ministry
-grow spiritually & mature in Christ
-acquire ministerial and relational skills
It draws upon the ConneXions 5Cs Model for nurturing a healthy culture of people-building across the life of the church and ministry. The goal is the holistic transformation of the apprentice into the mature image of Jesus Christ. It engages the 4 Transformational Dynamics of learning i.e. spiritual, experiential, relational, instructional.[1]
- A spiritual environment, involving relationship with God.
- A relational web, involving relationship with a mature leader and relationship with others.
- An experiential context, involving assignments and diverse learning opportunities.
- An instructional setting, where they can engage with a pool of resources from a variety of theological and ministry backgrounds.
The goal of this scheme is to produce evangelists who are godly in character, biblically and theologically grounded (knowledge), and equipped with the relevant pastoral and leadership skills for effective ministry. The training focuses on the heart with the development of a Christian character; the head with the development of a Christian mind ; and hand with the development of Christian skills for ministry.
The scheme aims to:
- Ground the intern in the spiritual disciplines and encourage them to grow in personal godliness.
- Provide the intern with a biblical framework for Christian Ministry.
- Give the apprentice a “missional” paradigm in obedience to the Great Commission.
- Assist the intern to think and respond theologically as they navigate through the cross-cultural and inter-generational complexities of ministry.
- Develop their gifts and skills through identifying their strengths and weaknesses as they are exposed to a range of ministries.
- Develop their relevant leadership, management, teaching, and evangelistic skills in the ministry.
The training approach is a blend of classroom learning (40%, either on-site or online classes) and field training (60%). The classroom teaching modules will be coordinated and conducted by the HOE staff and invited lecturers.
During their internship they would be exposed to the following training modules and other modules conducted in the School of Mission and Evangelism.
- New Confirmation Training Syllabus (Christian Doctrine)
- DT Introductory Course
- Discipleship Training (DT)
- Discipleship Leadership Training (LT)
- Evangelism Explosion Facilitator Course (XEE)
- Practical Ministry Module Series
- Intercultural Studies
- Mission trips
This learning approach will provide the intern with an immersive, contextual and realistic experience of ministry. It is designed to help interns grow in their spiritual disciplines of prayer, reflection and Bible study while developing their skills in obeying the Great Commission in mission and evangelism.
Mentoring Scheme
The intern/trainee would be required to participate in a structured mentoring programme while he/she is engaged as an intern. The goal is to strive towards the five elements that must be present in the life of a healthy Christian leader/servant of God based on the 5Cs: Calling, Character, Competencies, Christ and Community. The mentee is required to have regular mentoring/coaching session with his/her mentor (at least twice a year). The intern is required to produce a half-yearly report using the Diocesan Evangelist Internship Scheme Report (DEIS S01) to be completed based on the Diocesan Evangelist Internship Report Guide (DEIS G01).
Four key steps are essential for the mentoring/coaching relationship to progress effectively:
· Modelling: Pursue Christ-likeness. Follow my example, just as I follow Christ’s (1 Cor. 1:11).
· Guiding: Shepherd intentionally. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people (2 Tim. 4:2).
· Envisioning: Dream together. When dream comes true, there is life and joy (Prov. 13:12).
· Equipping: Develop skills. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ (Eph. 4:12).
The Subject Lecturer or Course Supervisor will provide an assessment report for the courses that the apprentice has attended during the apprenticeship period using the Internship Assessment Form (DEIS S02).
