MADISON'S HISTORIC DISTRICT
With much to see and do that brings the nation's heritage to life, Madison, Indiana is a lively reflection of pre-World War II small-town America. Illustrating nearly every period of the community’s development from the first quarter of the 19th century to 1939, the Madison Historic District is home to a very large collection of fine historic buildings and more. The town was also a hotbed of antislavery activity and an important stop on the Underground Railroad before the Civil War. The Madison National Historic Landmark District includes:
2,000 contiguous acres
Over 1,600 contributing historic buildings - including Federal, Greek Revival, and other styles of architecture
Two individually listed National Historic Landmarks
The first Underground Railroad Network to Freedom neighborhood in the US
The oldest firehouse in the US
The last remaining saddletree factory in the US dating to the 19th century
Madison also has:
The state's first railroad line (1836) with the steepest stretch of line haul track in the US (5.89%)
Indiana's highest waterfall - Clifty Falls in Clifty Falls State Park
