Visit America’s only restored 19th-century saddletree factory packed with unique and vintage belt-powered woodworking machines. Tours of the museum show how the Schroeder family business made saddletrees (the internal wooden frames of saddles), clothespins, and other products. Visitors will learn about the important industry and the skilled craftsmen who created the saddletrees for 98 years.

Public tours happen at a specific time on specific days. You can find the schedule of all our tours on the Calendar of Events page.
To join a tour, you do not need a reservation.
Meet at the Schroeder Saddletree Factory a few minutes before the tour begins. You'll be greeted by a guide and an HMI staff member who will collect the fee for the tour.
Public tours are $15 for adults of all ages. HMI members, students, and kids are always FREE. We accept cash and debit/credit cards.
All tours are guided tours.
A tour typically lasts approximately 60 minutes.
The site is not open beyond the tour time unless there is a special open house or other event.
A public tour includes access to the factory and museum buildings. There is no visitor access to the second floor of any building.
Some accommodations can be made for those with accessibility concerns. Please call in advance if you have questions.
Only the museum space has A/C and heat. Depending on the weather, it may be warm or chilly.
Groups of 8 or more should schedule a group tour by calling the HMI Office at 812-265-2967.

Our friends at the Wild West Rodeo Show stopped by the Schroeder Saddletree Factory Museum to present HMI with a check for $5000! The Wild West Rodeo Show had two sell-out nights and a magnificent fashion show that allowed them to donate back to the Madison community. The money received will be put towards creating better experiences for visitors of all ages at the Schroeder Saddletree Factory in 2023.
