Samuel de Champlain was famous because he discovered Lake Champlain. He wasn’t just an explorer, he showed that he cared more about others then himself by joining the army, and siding with the Huron to fight the Iroquois which was when he discovered the lake. He also helped others on their expeditions.
Champlain was born around 1565-1570, but no one knows the exact date. He was born in Brouage, on the Bay of Biscay, in France. In Champlain’s young adulthood he joined the army and became the Quarts Master of Cavalry.
Champlain wasn’t just well known for discovering the lake. He accomplished many other feats. From 1603- 1635 Champlain went on 12 voyages. From 1604-1607 he mapped most of Nova Scotia, Cape Cod, and Martha’s Vineyard. Later he mapped Rhode Island. In 1605 two years after his trip up the St. Lawrence river Champlain retraced the area which is now known as New York and the Great Lakes. In 1608 he lead 32 colonists to Quebec so that they could establish it as a fur-trading area. Nine Colonists, only nine, survived the first winter in Quebec, but more settlers came in the summer.
The person that made all of this happen was Henry IV of France because he paid for his expeditions.Samuel De Champlain suffered a stroke on December 25 in 1635 on his last voyage.
Champlain will always be a part of American history because of all his noble deeds and the fact that he has a lake named after him.
