Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese Explorer. He was a very brave and faithful man. He was most known for sailing the first ship around the world. The Victoria, the second smallest ship in his fleet, was that famous ship.
Ferdinand Magellan was born in Portugal in 1480. He was born of a noble family. He grew up in the palace of the Queen of Portugal. At an early age he sailed with many Portuguese fleets to the east Indies. It is here that he learned of the places where spices could be found. He sailed around the Cape of Good Hope at this time.
In 1513, Magellan was in a battle. He received a severe leg wound. he also fell into disfavor with the King of portugal who then refused to sponsor any more of his voyages. Magellan then left to go to Spain.
Fedinand's journey began in 1519. On september 20 he first sighted the south american coast on january first the, new year. With a fleet of five ships they crossed Magellan's Strait. They had reached a new sea. They named it the Pacific.
Magellan was killed in a battle between two tribes. His crew quickly left and continued on without Ferdinand. Only one ship remains to make it around the world. It was the Victoria. Eighteen crew members remained, but they grew famous.
Ferdinand was remembered with a brave reputation. He helped the world by naming the Pacific ocean. He was said to be a holy man. The pope was sent to explain Ferdinand's unusual behavior. Ferdinand is still remembered as an explorer.
