David Livingstone was a scottish explorer from the 1800’s. He explored Africa.
Livingstone was born on March 19th, in 1813 to Agnes Livingstone. His birth place was in Blantyre, Scotland--near Glasgow. As a child, Livingstone seemed to love nature. At ten years of age he went to school in the evenings and made a living in the cotton mills.
As a doctor and christian missionary, Livingstone headed to Glasgow to start his trip to Africa. There he met with his brother and they departed. They never saw each other again. In 1844, David Livingstone and Mary Moffat were happily married. They had six children together, one died as an infant.
Livingstone traveled to Lake Gnami, Lake Nysa, and the Chilwaka River. He also discovered Lake Bangweulu and Lake Tanganyika. In Africa, while walking, he was attacked at the shoulder by a wounded lion. The lion sprang from behind a bush and tore some of his shoulder off, thus breaking his arm temporarily. Livingstone was also the first ever european to see the Victoria Falls in Zambezi, Africa.
In 1862, Mrs. Livingstone died while exploring the Yovuma River on April 27th. Livingstone wrote a book about his travels in Africa. He traversed across Africa from 1840-1873, taking short breaks in between. One morning on May 1st of 1873, David Livingstone was found dead. Kneeling at the side of his bed, in prayer, was Livingstone himself. David Livingstone is still with us in the endless biographies of him and we will always remember him as the scottish explorer of Africa we know and love today.
