Tritons are touched by the element of water, and it shows in their appearance as teal-colored, tall people with green or blue eyes, and usually blue hair of medium to darker shade. While many tritons are sailors, and they seem to take (as expected) well to that profession, it's not clear where exactly tritons first appeared, and there are two especially thick concentrations of them on opposite sides of the continent. It's indeed even possible that they appeared independently in both places at the same time, and that the eastern and western tritons are not as similar as they first appear. They do look different, or at least they can, although over the years they have interbred to some degree so the old differences aren't as pronounced, but he sailors and corsairs of Gothrastir have skin that is more bluish, while the swampies of the Doloth Marches are more trending towards green-skin; although in both cases, they're still various shades of teal rather than actual blue or actual green. That said, those who are less familiar with them might occasionally confuse them for sylphs (in the east) and elves (in the west).
Of course, their personalities and abilities are not similar to either. Tritons of either population (or any other on the continent) are very at home in the water. Temperature swings bother them little; cold or hot, either one, and they are good swimmers and can breathe water or air equally well, in spite of the lack of visible external gills—this is a magical effect caused by the intrusion of the element of water into their lands which transformed them, not a biological mutation of any kind. As expected, in some ways their personality is the opposite of the surturs, and tritons are known for their patience and cool, tranquil approach to most things in life. That doesn't mean that they're friendly, of course; many are quite destructive, especially the corsairs of the east, but they do so with a coolness under fire that is almost disconcerting. When they decide that violence is the correct response to a situation, they approach it with aplomb, and are exceptionally thorough.
A triton gains +1 to Constitution, and affinity to any kind of swim check, and can breathe water or air equally well.
