Everyone knows what a human is. There are three basic core races that arrived on the continent of the HFX setting, and after centuries of blending have emerged as the nations that now live here, and which bear some resemblance to the peoples of Europe as a point of comparison. The original autochthonous peoples were of medium height, but very broad and robust. Their skin was pretty bronze and darker than the peoples of Europe today, but their eyes were shockingly blue, and their hair was dark brown rather than black (WHG). They were hunter-gatherers and their numbers were never high. Today, those who resemble their original phenotype are most common on the east and west coasts, where the other races didn't spread very thickly, leaving their genetics to still give a large portion to those who live on the horizontal edges of the continent, although after many years of blending, they are less likely to have the darker skin.
The Atlanteans arrived from the South next, and came in relatively large numbers, as well as bred and spread rapidly because of their agricultural prowess which allowed them to grow to numbers that the autochthonous peoples would have been unable to imagine. They also had bronzish Mediterranean skin like an Italian, Spaniard or Greek today, with darker hair and brown eyes (EEF). They quickly spread across the entire continent, but they were never as populous in the north nor the farthest eastern and western reaches of the continent.
When Atlantis sank, it caused calamities across the continent. The various nations that had emerged fought over dwindling resources. Crazy weather wracked the entire continent. Harvests failed. Disease and plague appeared in the wake of the weather, famine and wars. The population crashed to less than 10% of what it had been, and the old nations failed.
Into this Mad Max-ian post apocalyptic scenario, the final group arrived from the north, fleeing old Hyperborea, which was also struggling due to the calamities which destroyed Atlantis and so damaged the EFX continent. These guys were pretty typically Nordic. Blond and lighter brown hair were the most common, although red hair also appeared somewhat frequently. They almost all had pale blue or green eyes, and pale skin, sometimes freckled. They were taller than the other two populations, but also fairly robustly built.
This is all ancient history, though. After who knows how many centuries, no population is a perfect lingering example of any of these original prehistoric stocks of peoples. Nobody claims the legacy of any of these ancient peoples, who are now semi-legendary anyway, and the various nations don't recognize each other as brothers even when they share a phenotype and the majority of their DNA. That said, there is still a cline north to south of physical appearance; in the north you'll see many more people who appear Nordic still, and in the south many more who appear Mediterranean still. There is another cline east to west, with the original darker but blue-eyed peoples on both coasts, with those features less common in the center.
All of the peoples of the EFX setting will appear like varieties of Europeans, however. Anyone with a phenotype or cultural inspiration that's African, Asian, American Indian or Middle Eastern, etc. are present, if at all, on their own island continents far removed from the HFX continent, unknown to anyone living here, and beyond the scope of this setting development.
After the spread of these peoples, new nations grew out of the fragments of the old, now all of them mixed culturally and genetically to at least some degree. All of the continent was united some few hundred years ago or so under the auspices of the Paxian Empire. This empire fell apart under similar circumstances to that of the Roman Empire, although rather than barbarians from the borders as a catalyst, it was strange magical catastrophes that starting happening; the HFX world seemed to become coterminous with alternative and often magical planes of existence. The magic either warped people closest to its influence, or dumped foreign people from these magical places directly into the HFX continent. Sometimes it even dumped new lands, as in the case of Giledzar, where new volcanically active land appeared on the northwestern edge of the coast. This is the original source of the other races; they are either outsiders, from some other world, or humans who were magically turned into a different race by the influence of some magical coterminous relationship with an elemental or otherwise magical realm.
Once again, the human nations collapsed, although when they regrew in new form, this time the various nations had near humans of various kinds among them, which make up the remainder of the races available for selection.
Due to their variability and flexibility compared to the other races, all humans gain a +1 bonus to all skills.
