Elves in HFX are a little bit different than elves in many other fantasy settings. Rather than being an ethereal ancient race, they are people who have been changed by the magic influx of energy from an alternate Realm that is like a platonic ideal of the forest and the wild. They are so at home in the forest, that they have been changed to resemble forest creatures themselves to a great degree; their skin has turned green, or at least greenish, their hair is even usually green, and their eyes are a bright green. They are slender, gracile and lithe by nature, and their metabolism is fast enough that few indeed become fat, even if they eat too much and are inactive by nature. Indeed, they are usually considered to be one of the most beautiful of the races overall, although many find their coloration too exotic to be to their taste. Some elves, although not all, undergo seasonal changes in appearance; their skin turning tan and their hair reddish orange in autumn, and a pale blueish white and gray in winter, to turn light green again in spring and deepening to a darker green in summer.
To some degree their personalities have changed too; they get along well enough with each other and other people who appreciate some of the same things that they do, but they do tend towards aloofness. This isn't true unfriendliness in the traditional sense, but more driven by appreciation for nature; large crowds, the noise of people and their things, tend to make them feel anxious, and the quieter sounds of the breeze in the leaves, the babble of a brook or the chirping of birds and squirrels makes them feel at ease.Â
That said, that doesn't mean that there aren't many who don't live in more urban settings, although those that do often have to retreat after a few hours to a quieter sanctum in their home, often one that has many plants growing in it, and small fountains; the white noise of falling water removing them from the sounds of the city outside. They also do well when wealthy enough to have larger estates, or even larger homes where they can have some privacy and solitude in extensive gardens. And of course, many elves can be more or gregarious too; although even these usually need to "recharge" after a time in solitude.
Elves in HFX are not necessarily overtly magical, although perhaps it comes to them easier than other races due to their higher charisma score, which protects them from being as subject to Sanity failures when casting spells. They can live anywhere, and in fact are reasonably well-known in most of the kingdoms of HFX, but are most common in the Reynhowe Frontier and the Valade Holds, and many elves see those two realms as their respective homelands. Not that the two are necessarily always on the same page, or even the most friendly with each other, and elves of one may well have political, social and cultural reasons to dislike elves from the other, but there are, at this point, elves who hail from almost anywhere, and elves are fairly common in the Protectorate of Rodach and have been there for many generations.
Like most near humans, they do not have an extraordinarily long life, like elves in some settings, although their healthy and (relatively) low stress outdoor lifestyle does tend to make them longer lived than humans. The longest an elf has been observed to live was 148 years, and he had been healthy and active up into his 120s.
An elf gains a +1 to charisma and an affinity for Bushcraft as racial traits.
