JOSEPHIAN ARBORETUM
The role of Botany as a branch of study is gaining more and more relevance and significance in this post-modern era. Directly related to plant life and ecology, it touches all aspects of human existence as plants are the sustaining force of life in this universe. Our aim in teaching this subject is to impart in our students a love towards plants, an awareness of the need to protect and preserve the infinite variety of flora, to encourage the young minds to take up research in this field, to promote sustainable development, to conscentize our students on the adverse impact of technology and industrialization and ultimately to work for the building up of a society based on the values of love and truth
The Department maintains a botanical garden having a good collection of indigenous medicinal plants, astrological plants.129 plants on the campus creating an assemblage of flora especially in the botanical garden. 35 medicinal plants,26 fruit-yielding plants. The vegetables cultivated on the college campus include 14 plants of daily use for domestic purposes. About 63 species of herbs and shrubs are visible on the campus.
The Botany department along with Bhoomitra sena and the wetland club look after the maintenance of 140 species of plant belonging to Trees, shrubs and herbs. The medicinal plants are protected and an awareness class on the uses of these plants is given. The total vegetation includes the campus area, botanical garden and some cultivable areas. Depending upon the seasonal variation, floristic diversity thrives well on the campus.
