Description: Spilanthus is an herbaceous plant that belongs to the daisy family. It is recognized in traditional medicine throughout Asia and South America for a variety of properties including anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and aphrodisiac effects. The leaves are used as food sources. The flowers of Spilanthus have earned it the name “toothache plant” for their numbing and pain-relieving effects.
Flowering and Fruiting: September to January.
Economic Importance: The most common and widespread use is to treat a toothache and throat and gum infections. Worldwide the flower heads are used either fresh or dried and powdered, but the use of roots and leaves has been recommended as well. The plant is further recommended as a cure for dysentery and rheumatism, and to enhance the immune system.
