Family History records a lot of whens and wheres. But it is important to know when the where was because that where might not be there now. Confused yet?
Over time state and county (even country) boundaries have changed significantly. Many records are kept on a county level. As county boundaries change over time the records stay with the county seat at the time the record was created. For Example, find a land record for a property in Soda Springs, Idaho:
So while searching for a record, it is important to know what the boundaries were at the time the record was created so we know which county seat holds the records.
Same with states and territories. Idaho wasn’t always Idaho.
