Mapping Our Relatives
Maps are a great way to learn about where your ancestors lived and who their neighbors were. Today we will take a look at Historic Map Works (http://www.historicmapworks.com/). This site has some really great old maps. We are going to be looking at the Spirit Lake (town) area of Kootenai County, Idaho using the Metsker Map collection for that county published in 1959.
Hints
Use the Browse option (Interactive Browse works best for me). Click on the map to choose the country, then state.
Results are in alphabetical order by county, select the desired map set.
Search the “index” image for the place you are looking for.
The first number to the right of the place name tells you which section to look for on the map and the second number tells you which map (township) to go to.
Going back to the map set, choose the page number that corresponds with the map number.
Zoom in to view the desired section (first number).
Smaller property owners are written in the margins.
